Meet the Finalist: Joseph Nybyk, "The Arithmetic of Survival"

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

I've always been passionate about the arts. My mother worked on stage and made a point to expose my brother and I to the arts as we were growing up. Theatre was my first love, music was my next, but film and television just blew me away. As a child i fell in love with Star Wars like everyone else in my generation and to this day, i keep falling in love with great movie and great movie.

What's is your all time favorite film? Why is it special to you?

Lawrence of Arabia and Casablanca will always be my two favorite films. They are Hollywood classics. Lawrence of Arabia for it's sweeping cinematography, its score, Peter O'toole, and the sheer brilliance of Lean's storytelling. And Casablanca for its brilliant telling of such a simple love story.

What tips would you give aspiring filmmakers who are just starting their careers?

Keep creating. Never stop. Always be creating content for any platform.
