Meet the Finalist: Eric Larson, "Check the Locks"
What inspired you to become a filmmaker?
I've always been interested in a lot of art forms: writing, painting, photography, music, architecture. Filmmaking is the best way, in my opinion, to merge all of them.
What's is your all time favorite film? Why is it special to you?
Fargo. Firstly, as someone who grew up in the Midwest, I really appreciate the attention to detail as far as the characters' eccentricities and the whole exploration of 'Minnesota Nice.' I also love the way the Cohen brothers, and all the performers, are able to capture such a unique sense of humor throughout the darkness. The script doesn't have punchlines; it's not meant to be a comedy. But I love the way they make things funny in such a natural way. It feels very true to real life, but dreamy at the same time -- if that makes any sense.
What tips would you give aspiring filmmakers who are just starting their careers?
Don't be afraid to reach out to people you admire and ask to buy them a cup of coffee. It's a smaller world than you might realize, and most people are happy to talk about themselves and offer advice.
